Open Dental Software Review
Open Dental Software is a HIPAA compliant open-source dental practice management software that provides on-premise electronic charting, billing, practice management, and imaging applications that’s suitable for any large and small dental practice. Open Dental practice management solution includes patient care charts, prescribing capabilities, treatment planning, appointment scheduling with automated appointment reminders, an integrated graphical tooth chart, SMS and email texting, credit card processing, and custom reporting.
With Open Dental Software prescribing capabilities, dental professionals can provide patients with electronic prescriptions and printed prescriptions, which can be filled in using predefined templates. Prescriptions are automatically logged and can be reviewed using a specially created report.
The treatment plan module provides patients with a custom treatment plan and collects all required treatments for an individual patient. Users can send, add, and modify preauthorization treatment forms from this module and can modify fees for individual procedures. With the Open Dental’s chart module, any dental hygienist or dental examiners can provide patients with a graphical tooth chart on-the-spot without the need for secondary software.
The solution provides a patient portal to make payments, view appointment confirmations, view treatment plans, send or receive webmail, and download summaries of care. The appointment calendar can be viewed in daily or weekly mode and allows any dental assistant to view upcoming patient appointments.
Open Dental is compatible with Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems.

Pros and cons
Open Dental has been great, and hoping to expand with the software as we open more offices. The features are in depth and offer us the abilty to use technology to stay current with innovations.
It would be great to have a mandated educational technician come to the office prior to launching for the dental staff to truly understand the software.
Scheduling is a breeze, keeping logs of communication between staff and patients is simple and easy to find, and its nice to be able to view imaging inside the same program that we enter chart notes.
It’s open source, which I love, therefore, I’m able to change, adjust and add forms, lab slips, charting and much more. Reports are easy and the selection is great.
It is uncomfortable to be learning it in front of the patient.
An emergency data recovery team was able to get rep a semi corrupted, semi correct version of my data and he put it all back together for the office.
They spent hours remotely working on my machine and escalated it to their top techies. And it was really a problem with Windows not Open Dental that caused the problem.
I hate to complain because there’s not too much to complain about… but we don’t love that you can’t edit the hours on the schedule to only start at 6 or 7 AM and end at 6 PM.
